1. How do I get a library card?

Library cards offered free of charge. Therefore, we recommend that each member of family has their own library card. A photo ID (such as a driver’s license, state issued ID card, passport or military ID) and proof of residence (such as a bill with your current address, renter’s agreement, etc.) are required at the time of registration. Minors must be accompanied by their parents, since the parent must complete the library card application. The library card has no expiration date. There is no charge to replace lost, damaged or stolen cards. If the card is lost or stolen, please report it to the library as soon as possible, so we can prevent unauthorized use.

Note: The Alpine Public Library and the Marathon Public Library have separate library cards. They are not interchangeable.

2. I am not a resident of Brewster County. Can I still get a library card?

Yes, however you must visit your home library first and apply for a Texshare card. Once you have a Texshare card, you may present it at the library that you would like to join. From that point, the answer to question #1 applies.

3. How many items may I check out?

Alpine Public Library – Ten materials per patron. Up to 4 out of the 10 materials may be movies (VHS and DVD.)

Marathon Public Library – Same as Alpine Public Library

4. How long may I check out materials?

Alpine Public Library – If you are a resident of Brewster County you may have movies (VHS and DVD) for one week. They may be renewed once. All other materials available for checkout may be kept for two weeks. They may be renewed twice.

Marathon Public Library – Same as Alpine Public Library

5. Do I have to come to the library to renew materials?

Although we would love to see you, the answer is no. You may also renew materials by phone or by emailing the circulation librarian. See our homepage for contact information.

6. My materials are late. What do I owe you?

We do not charge specific fines for late materials. However, your generous donations help keep both libraries open. If you would like to make a donation, you may place it in the jar kept at the circulation desk.

7. What if the material I borrowed is damaged or lost?

You will be charged the replacement cost of the lost or damaged item. We prefer this as opposed a patron buying and donating a copy of the lost or damaged item. Please contact the library where the material was borrowed from to find out the replacement cost.

8. What if you don’t have the material I need?

If we don’t have the material you need, we will borrow it from another library. When the material arrives (usually within 2 to 6 weeks) we will contact you and you may pick up the material. The charge is $1.50 per material. Payment is due when you pick up the material. Please return the materials to the Alpine Public Library.

9. What do I need do to use your internet computers?

If you are over 18, fill out an Internet User Agreement and present a photo ID. We will keep the agreement and a copy of the photo ID on file.

If you are between 14 and 17, your parents must fill out a User Agreement for you. They must present their photo ID. We will keep the agreement and a copy of the photo ID on file. You are more than welcome to complete an Internet User Agreement for adults when you turn 18.

If you are under 14, your parents must fill out an Internet User Agreement for you. They must present their photo ID. We will keep the agreement and a copy of the photo ID on file. The minor must be under the direct supervision of the parent who signed the user agreement during the entire time the minor uses the internet. The minor must also use the children’s computer which is in the children’s room. At the age of 14, the parent may complete the user agreement for minors aged 14 through 17 for their child.

10. Do you have wireless internet access?

Yes. After completing an Internet User Agreement, you may use our wireless internet access. Once you have set up your laptop, notify the librarian at the circulation desk and she will enter the access code. There is no charge for accessing the internet. We do, however, charge 20 cents per page for copies.

11. I already have a library card. Do I still need to complete an Internet User Agreement?

We’re glad you are a patron. But, yes, you still need to complete the Internet User Agreement. This agreement is separate from your library card.

Note: Residents and non-residents of Brewster County are more than welcome to use our free internet access. We have tourists and other visitors from across the United States and around the world who use our internet. Anyone who is willing to complete the Internet User Agreement and provide proper ID is more than welcome to use our internet access.
